Promoting from the tools to the team: building first-time site supervisors
Sydney Construction Ltd · Construction · around 180 staff · Sydney, NSW
The challenge
The business kept promoting its best tradespeople into supervisory roles and losing them within a year. Site briefings were run differently on every project, new supervisors went back to doing the work themselves rather than leading it, and none of them had ever been taught how to manage people.
What we did
Three weeks of discovery first: interviews with the project director, six existing supervisors and a sample of site crew, plus a review of exit interviews. We then ran a 12-week blended programme for 12 emerging leaders, built around four half-day workshops, monthly one-to-one coaching, and a workplace project each participant ran on their own site with their manager involved.
What changed
- 12 emerging leaders completed the full programme; nine moved into formal supervisory roles within six months.
- Site briefings now follow one structure across every project.
- New supervisors report delegating work instead of absorbing it.
- The programme now runs for each new intake of leading hands.
The Emerging Leader Accelerator helped our rising stars step into leadership roles with confidence. MTRAIN's approach is practical, not theoretical — exactly what we needed.
